Sewing Project: Door Window Curtain

Well, I haven’t totally stopped sewing.  After some break-ins in my neighborhood (yay, not), I finally got around to making a curtain for the windows on my front door.  The two small windows are near the top of the door, but someone who is 6 feet tall can easily see in (and, as my giant friend demonstrated when he glared at me from outside the house and scared me to death, they have).  The problem with this view is that anyone can see straight through the bottom floor since we have a very open floor plan down there.

So, I already had purchased some black fabric from a second-hand store and washed it in preparation of tackling this project.  My in-laws were due in town and I wanted to get this done before they arrived.  I had purchased an old pattern for various types of curtains (also from the second-hand store), so I devoted one Sunday afternoon to this project.  The fabric was a little more see-through than I thought (the second-hand store is a little dark inside, so it was hard to see), so what I actually did was make the curtain twice as long as I needed.  Instead of making the gap at the top of the fabric (for the curtain rod to go through), I decided to make the gap in the middle of the fabric; that way, the curtain would have two sides that would drape over the curtain rod and the curtain would be much less see-through.  I chose black because the outside of our door is painted black, so the curtain matches.

I did learn a couple of things doing this project.  I almost made the gap for the curtain rod too small; it was really hard to get the curtain onto the rod.  I also realized that curtains have extra fabric at the top because that helps to hide the hardware (i.e. the metal and screws) that are used to put the curtain rod onto the wall or door.  In the end, though, I think it turned out pretty nicely.  My Mom really liked my idea to double the fabric over and thought I did a good job as well (awww….).
